Ethan Tieu

We are proud to spotlight Ethan Tieu, an undergraduate at the University of Miami, recognized as both a Barry Goldwater Scholarship—the top scholarship for research—and a Stamps Scholar. Ethan’s love for building, influenced by his childhood experiences with Legos and Minecraft, has led him to the field of neuroscience. This past summer, he conducted research at Columbia University. Currently, he is conducting research at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, focusing on rare neurogenetic diseases and the Miami Project focusing on curing paralysis. Research is Ethan's pride and joy, which is why he has set an ambitious goal of addressing a weak point of research: translating scientific discoveries into effective therapies. With this in mind, Ethan is pursuing an MD/PhD and aims to integrate his research with clinical insights to advance patient care. Academically, Ethan has maintained a 4.0 GPA and has been recognized on the Presidential Honor Roll throughout his entire college experience. He is committed to working across different fields. Initially a Neuroscience major, he has broadened his studies to include Computer Science, co-founding the Bonsai Applied Computations Group with other members of LTI. This initiative sources a variety of computational projects from different professional sectors in the Miami area—such as neuroscience from Miller, AI from the Law School, and quantitative trading from clients—and organizes UM's computer science students to support these projects. Ethan is also actively involved on multiple executive boards. Through his involvement with LTI, Ethan has developed valuable networking and professional skills that have helped him secure critical positions and experiences. He stated, “I joined LTI with only a handful of goals in mind, and it has given me more than I could ever hope for.” We are excited to support him as he continues to grow and look forward to his future achievements in neuroscience and medicine.
